14 New Restaurants to Try in Hoboken + Jersey City this Summer (2024)

Summer is an easy-breezy time of year to try new things. From hobbies to hairstyles, it’s all fair game. One of our favorite things to try, of course, is food — and since the start of 2024, Hudson County has seen restaurant and cafe openings aplenty. There are new sweet and savory options popping up all over Hoboken and Jersey City. To help you find your favorite new spot, we’ve compiled 15 new restaurants in Hoboken and Jersey City to try in summer 2024.

Terrace by Alessio’s | 1201 Madison Street

When Luca Infantinoopened Alessio’s in 2020, it was his first time owning a restaurant. Four years later, Luca has his own little Hudson County empire, and Terrace by Alessio’s is the newest addition to the family. Located in the Northwest Resiliency Park, Terrace by Alessio’s has breakfast, lunch, and dinner service, with 50 indoor seats and 100 outdoor seats. Many familiar favorites have a place on the menu (namely, The Hoboken Girl breakfast sandwich), but dinner features new options like meatballs, calamari, and more.

BYRD | 800 Jackson Street

A highly-anticipated project from the team behind Common Lot in Millburn, BYRD opened in Hoboken this May. The Art Deco vibes inside are complemented by the restaurant’s upscale American eats and selection of locally sourced alcohol. Starting June 23rd, BYRD is launching a special Sunday roast that feeds six people and is available for pre-order only. You can browse the menu here.

Gotan | 770 Jackson Street

A new cafe is always welcome, but this locally-owned chain recently added dinner service to its menu of Mediterranean eats. Gotan opened its Hoboken location earlier this spring in a massive, two-floor space at 770 Jackson Street. It’s a welcoming environment for anyone who works remotely, and the salads are not to be missed.

Cafe Tati | 401 Bloomfield Street

Regulars at Barbes and La Boheme would be remiss not to try Cafe Tati. A sister project to the Hoboken restaurant duo, Cafe Tati is serving up coffees, teas, and a mix of Moroccan and French eats. There’s a countertop where locals can sit and enjoy their drinks, but the owners envisioned a grab-and-go experience for the space. Cafe Tati officially opened its doors May 2024.

Brandon’s Donuts | 310 Sinatra Drive

While maybe not a traditional restaurant, this new doughnut pop-up earns a spot on our list because the doughnuts arethat good. Originally based in Brooklyn, Brandon’s Donuts is from the team behind The Ainsworth and recently opened a pop-up shop inside the popular Hoboken bar. There are plenty of experimental flavors to try, but if you’re looking for something truly unique, order the “Cool Girl PB&T Doughnut” (it has tequila in it).

Jersey City

The Roxy | 66 Monitor Street

Corto in Jersey City has built a solid fanbase over the years with its homemade pasta and even homier decor. So it’s no wonder that the team’s newest venture, The Roxy, is already becoming a local favorite. A slight departure from the coziness of Corto, The Roxy boasts an Art Deco vibe with a menu emphasizing seafood. It also has a bar (Corto is BYOB) and is located on the first floor of the Starling.

Mango Mango | 175 2nd Street

This downtown spot has refreshing fruit drinks and cold beverages that make for a refreshing summer treat. Mango Mango is an NYC-based dessert chain that specializes in Hong Kong-style treats including cakes, and waffles.

La Milpa Taqueria | 45 Franklin Street

Jersey City Heights has no shortage of delicious food options, and newcomer La Milpa Taqueria is no exception. From the team behind The Franklin (situated right across the street) La Milpa has a sizable menu of tacos, flautas, quesadillas, huaraches, and enchiladas. Just like The Franklin, it’s BYOB, with a colorful outdoor patio to boot. It’s worth noting, too, that La Milpa is open until midnight every day of the week.

The Hive | 615 Jersey Avenue

The Hive is no longer Hoboken’s little secret, reaching millions on the internet (including Blake Lively) with its creative coffees and famed cinnamon rolls. It was only fitting for the mom duo behind the local favorite to expand their horizons, so they set their sights on Jersey City. The Hive officially opened its Hamilton Park location earlier this spring, serving up the same flavors and fun locals know and love. PS: yes, we know this isn’ttechnically a restaurant, but those cinnies are a whole meal, and we all know it.

The Horseshoe Kitchen + Bar | 837 Jersey Avenue

Shortly after Jersey Social’s closure in April, a new restaurant and bar called The Horseshoe took its place on the ground floor of the Cast Iron Lofts. A self-proclaimed “neighborhood spot,” this new eatery is serving up small plates, sandwiches, and a few entrees with influence from various cuisines and flavors.

West Bistro | 331 West Side Avenue

West Bistro took over The Backyard’s former location earlier this year and reimagined the space to be a cozy, BYOB Cuban-American restaurant. It’smuch more than a place to go to dinner with friends, family, or a date: think upbeat music, fireplaces, and one-of-a-kind artworks. Menu highlights definitely include Ropa Vieja Empanadas (stuffed with shredded beef), the Dumbo Burger (Angus beef with gouda cheese, bacon, and caramelized onions), and the Vaca Frita (fried pulled strip steak with white rice and beans).

As always, the Hoboken + Jersey City food scene is ever-growing, and there are plenty of new eateries slated to open up this summer. Here are some (though, the list is always growing) we’re excited for.

Alfalfa | 92 Bloomfield Street, Hoboken

Alfalfa is far from new for Hoboken + Jersey City locals, but the popular salad spotisopening a new downtown Hoboken location this summer. The born-in-Hoboken eatery is going back to its roots: namely, the former location of Sobsey’s Market, which co-owner Dan Sobsey’s family ran for years. Alfalfa’s grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, June 22nd.

Number Eleven Food Store | 534 Adams Street, Hoboken

In December 2023, Number Eleven Food Store returned to its roots as a pop-up inside Dozzino. The pop-up took a brief hiatus in April but is gearing up to resume serving its Asian-inspired eats in the coming weeks. If you’re wondering why it’s called Number Eleven Food Store, there are only eleven menu items (clever, if we may say so). In the past, this no-frills restaurant boasted dishes like Drunken Noodles, Potstickers, Ma and Pa Lumpia, and Pepperoni Fried Rice.

Cuban Pete’s | 518 Washington Street, Hoboken

Cuban Pete’s, a BYOB Cuban restaurant in Montclair, is moving into the former Charrito’s space at 518 Washington Street. Back in April, the team shared plans with HG to open up as early as this June. Much about the Hoboken restaurant will mirror that of Montclair’s — namely the menu of Cuban eats, sizable portions, and lively, Havana-inspired atmosphere. One notable difference, however, is that the team is trying to secure a liquor license for the Hoboken outpost. Back in April, the team expressed that the license was “still very much up in the air,” and that Cuban Pete’s would open BYOB if not acquired.
