Hi guys,

So, I know of a poor family that were broken into and robbed, their power was cut and wifi pulled out (to render security useless).
What works in a power outage? Do you need some cameras with solar power or battery back up?
Can anyone advise?
Will it still record to a DVR or cloud in the event of the burglars doing the above?

I'm quite new to this myself so looking for a heads up too. Cheers

CCTV that works in a power outage (4) Blacktea2sugars

Can anyone advise?

There is no solution perfectly protected from that eventuality.

There are standalone cellular cameras that are battery powered with solar top up, but they will require a cellular plan, in addition to a cloud solution. An alternative is to have an array of cameras with local storage, and hope that they miss one or two as they attempt to turn them off. The most traditional is to have power over Ethernet (PoE) cameras linked to a DVR that is connected to an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) which will record for a period after the power is cut off.

All solutions can be interfered with/disabled if determined burglars can get access to the hardware. The ultimate would be to operate a layered arrangement, with a mix of wired and wireless cameras, mains and battery powered, and with both local and offsite storage of the imagery. However, that gets expensive and management intensive, so is probably beyond all but the most risk averse and determined home owner. More practical is to have a moderately well designed security system that is on all the time, coupled with adequate insurance.

4g and Wifi, battery powered, can be solar powered and records to SD card as well as to the cloud.

pretty sure Eufy does what you need too.

The problem as pointed out though is if someone is determined enough, they can evade all the countermeasures installed. The key to home security is to create enough friction so that the burglers go elsewhere.

Most proper hardwired alarms have a battery back up too. So cameras with No alarm system set up is a sure fire way to fall flat on the home security front.

Gold standard includes proper security screens, visible cameras (ideally ones that can trigger an audible alarm as a warning), A solid alarm system that you "accidentally" set off ever no and then to let the street know you have one (just in case the thieves live close by). Make sure it has a screamer in side. This will make it extremely uncomfortable to thieves if they do get in. any extended exposure will permanently damage their hearing. motion sensor floodlights etc.

Even with all this present, if you have bad habits like leaving your car in the driveway overnight (or permanently because you're one of those people who stores cr@p in their garage instead), having your garage open to the street for long periods showing off your carbon frame bikes and expensive tools to anyone driving by or leaving the packing boxes for your new 75 inch Sony OLED TV out the front for a week waiting for pick up, you're basically asking for it.

Home security is about being smart and realistic.

Dark matter scientist, can breathe underwater, mind reader and can freeze matter just by willing it. Trust me, its in my sig.

My friend have this setup when I went to his house. He explained to me.

Hardwired alarm with motion sensor inside, has battery backup so even if power is cut off, still works. He paid extra for the alarm system to be monitored as well, so once it is triggered, phone call will go to him telling him his house alarm is triggered.

Next, he has CCTV all around the exterior with UPS backup but there is no cloud storage so if the thief took the entire DVR, then there's no recording. But if power cutoff, it will work and record at least for a while.

To mitigate this risk to have a copy of recording, he put Arlo camera all around inside the house. The location are strategic location all pointing to entrance or doors or windows. So if someone came in, the Arlo will be triggered and sent to cloud. But this only works if there's Internet (wifi). So he has UPS again for the WiFi, router and NBN.

So basically, if power is cut, Internet and WiFi is still working. CCTV, alarm system and Arlo still working. Thief walked in, CCTV capture it, alarm system triggered and siren blaring and Arlo captured footage goes to cloud.

But still, as noname mentioned, be smart and be realistic is the best.
