About Ramai the Sumatran Orangutan

Ramai, born on October 4th, 1985, is an introverted orangutan who enjoys spending time on her own. A devoted mother, Ramai continues to live with her adult daughter, Jingga – a typical dynamic for young female orangutans and their mothers in the wild. Her favourite pastime is making soup by mixing bits of fabric, chalk, and chewed-up plant material in a tub of soapy water.

About Toronto Zoo

The Toronto Zoo is the largest in Canada, home to over 5,000 animals representing 500 species on more than 700 acres of land next to Canada’s Rouge National Urban Park.

Toronto Zoo’s mission is to provide a living centre for education and science, committed to providing compelling guest experiences and inspiring passion to protect wildlife and habitats.

About the Wildlife Health Centre

The Wildlife Health Centre at the Toronto Zoo was the first of its kind in Canada and further enhances the Toronto Zoo as a centre of excellence in high-quality animal care through veterinary and reproductive sciences, nutritional physiology, and conservation and wildlife research.

This facility was specially designed to tend to every need of the animals that call the Toronto Zoo home, while also providing the public increased visibility of the work that our Wildlife Health Care team completes every day.

Preventative Care in Veterinary Medicine

A healthy zoo begins with preventative care. The Toronto Zoo spends a lot of time and resources on preventative care – reducing the number of animal illnesses and emergencies. Preventative care includes routine check-ups, vaccinations, bloodwork, fecal and urine analyses, diagnostic imaging and neonatal care. Toronto Zoo staff trains their animals to voluntarily participate in these procedures. From the tiniest fish to the largest polar bear, the Wildlife Health Centre can accommodate most of the Zoo’s wildlife here – but they also make regular “house calls” on site.
