One Book, One County
Los Angeles Public Library System and Los Angeles County Library System

Throughout the month of June, and continuing through July 27th, 2024, LAPL, LA County Library, and 16 other library systems will be participating in One Book, One County making it the “largest book club in LA.” This year’s selected book is L.A. Weather by María Amparo Escandón. “The program encourages all 9.8 million residents in Los Angeles County to read and discuss the same book, fostering community connection and education.” Unlimited digital copies will be available. A culminating event is planned for Saturday, July 27th and will feature an author talk, musical performances, and other activities. Details are available online.

Shades of Greatness: Art Inspired by Negro Leagues Baseball

Families have the opportunity to visit the Museum of African American Art to view the exhibition, Shades of Greatness: Art Inspired by Negro Leagues Baseball. “The exhibit features 35 original works of art produced by 28 artists who interpret the Negro Leagues experience on and off the playing field.” This traveling exhibition comes from the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri and will be in Los Angeles until July 7th. The Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Fountain Valley Summerfest

Fountain Valley Summerfest is happening this weekend on Thursday, June 13th (5 pm 10 pm), Friday, June 14th (5 pm to 11 pm), Saturday, June 15th (2 pm to 11 pm), and Sunday, June 16th (12 pm to 8 pm). The fun includes live musical performances, carnival rides and games, food, drone light shows (on Friday and Saturday), and more. Details and ticket information can be found online. The Friends of the Mar Vista Library, who recently celebrated their 40th anniversary, are ardent supporters of their local branch of the LA Public Library, and hold quarterly book sales to raise much-needed funds. You’ll be getting a bargain and supporting a good cause at the same time.

El Capitan Theatre: Inside Out 2

From Thursday, June 13th through Sunday, July 21st families can see the Disney Pixar film Inside Out 2 at the El Capitan Theatre. Many screenings are planned including Spanish-Dubbed screenings (June 26 and July 6), Open-Caption Screenings (June 27 and June 30), and Sensory Inclusive Screenings (June 29 and July 2). Family PRIDE is a special event happening at the Annenberg Community Beach House on Friday, June 14th from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. “Let’s come together to show our support for the LGBTQ+ community and spread love, acceptance, and understanding.” Pickle, the first Drag Laureate of the City of West Hollywood, will host a special story time, and Queer Chicana graphic novelist Kayden Phoenix will lead a “Draw Your Own Superhero and Princess” workshop for kids. On Friday, June 14th from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm (and every second Friday of the month through September), Canyon Country Community Center hosts a special cultural experience which “brings the history and traditions of people and places from around the world” to attendees. The City of Santa Ana invites families to enjoy a Summer Movie in the Park each Friday evening this summer (through July 26th). Families may bring their own lawn chairs and/or blankets and picnics. (The movie is rated PG.)

Movies at the Steps: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Take the family to The Culver Steps on Friday, June 14th for a free, outdoor screening of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (rated PG). Families are encouraged to bring blankets to sit on. The outdoor “movie-screening experience includes comfortable seating on plush bean bag chairs or deep-seated Adirondack chairs,?state-of-the-art projection and sound, and valley views in an upscale event space on the rooftop of Westfield Fashion Square.” Doors open at 7:30 pm with music, games, and giveaways to enjoy before the movie starts at sunset (around 8:30 pm). Pickle, the director of Drag Story Hour, will host the event and will be joined by fellow drag artists for readings of It’s Okay to Be Different, Feminist Baby, and The Hips on the Drag Queen Go Swish, Swish, Swish. At 11:00 am, there is a a Family Matinee screening of Singin’ in the Rain in 4K, described as “one of the most beloved movie musicals of all time is also one of the greatest films about moviemaking ever made.”
June’s Drop-In Workshop for Families is happening from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm. From 11:00 am to 2:30 pm, families are invited to participate in the Getty’s Sun Print: Family Workshop. “Harness the power of the sun to make one-of-a-kind photographic prints called cyanotypes by arranging flowers, leaves, and stencils on light-sensitive material.” This is a free, drop-in program. Timed admission tickets are required and are available online.
Also on Sunday, families have the opportunity to learn from photographer Francesco Fragomeni “and explore the art and science of early photographic processes related to Hippolyte Bayard’s life and work.” This event is held in hour-long blocks twice during the day, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm.Both events complement two of the Getty’s current exhibitions, Hippolyte Bayard: A Persistent Pioneer and Nineteenth-Century Photography Now.
